Person hit, killed by Metra train at Rogers Park station

Minutes before rush hour, a person was struck and killed by a commuter train on Chicago’s Far North Side.

The incident happened around 4:54 p.m. at the Rogers Park Metra station at 7000 North Ravenswood Avenue, between Lunt and Greenleaf.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found the train stopped about a quarter of a mile north of the station.

Authorities later confirmed that someone was indeed struck by the train, but the person’s condition wasn't immediately clear.

However, one source indicated the person is dead.

UPDATE: 5:19 p.m. -- There is no indication an ambulance was called to the scene, but there were several request for crime scene tape.

Metra train service may experience temporary delays.

UPDATE: 5:24 p.m. -- The local media arrived at the scene of the apparent accident. Authorities said Metra is going to handle the investigation, and they have even agreed to facilitate the removal of the fatally injured person's body.

UPDATE: 6:14 p.m. -- The victim's brother arrived at the Metra station. Citing police dispatch reports, the decedent's family member was running toward the platform. Authorities were instructed to stop him from approaching the tracks.
