At approximately 4:42 p.m., a 911 caller reported a theft at Nookies Tree, 3334 North Halsted Street, near Halsted and Buckingham.
According to police dispatch, the complainant saw a black male with braids or dreadlocks steal an iPhone.
Adding to the thief’s description, the offender is said to be approximately 17-years-old, 5’7”, 120 pounds, and he was wearing a red shirt and black pants.
Investigators said the crook was working with other black males who were also pretending to pass out pamphlets.
After the theft, the band of thieves fled the area in a tan Astro van with a partial temporary tag starting with the numbers 8 7, said an eyewitness.
Back on August 6, 2012, a similar crime was reported in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood.
