Earlier this month, Chicago News Report received an email that indicated an attorney wanted to subpoena CNR's "records"... a few days later, someone tried to hack into my blog.
On May 14, 2012, I received an email from a woman named Patricia Gutierrez.
Gutierrez, who identified herself as a Cook County public defender, said she wanted to contact my "legal department", because she needed to "subpoena my records".
When I asked Gutierrez to be more specific about the information she was looking for, she said, "I have an attorney that would like to contact your legal department. I do not know specifically what records the attorney would like to obtain."
After I explained that she was contacting a blog - not a news organization - and that there were no "records", only news articles, which were published online - I never heard from Gutierrez, again.
However, on May 16 and May 17, someone attempted to reset the password on my blog and gain access.
Their attempts were documented by emails sent to me via Blogger's support team: "Blogger received a request for a recovery email associated with http://www.chicagonewsreport.com/. If you did not request this email, you may ignore it. Each team member will receive notice of their own personal sign-in information."
