Authorities are searching for a would-be thief who tried to help himself to the proceeds at a North Side deli.

At 8 p.m., an attempted robbery was reported at Piatto Pronto, 5624 North Clark Street, in Chicago's Andersonville, Edgewater neighborhood, according to police dispatch reports.

Investigators said a male white offender tried to reach into an open cash register and steal money from the store.

The suspect is in his 50s, about 6-feet-tall, and 200 pounds.

The offender, who fled the scene on a mountain bike, was wearing a blue and white jacket and he was carrying a yellow Walkman.

The suspect was last seen going northbound from Piatto Pronto, said police.
