A Chicago police officer’s unmarked vehicle was stolen on the South Side.

Around 5:20 a.m., an officer jumped out of his car on the 7500 block of South Racine Avenue in pursuit of a suspect. Shortly thereafter, a thief climbed into the cop’s white SUV and took off.

At 5:30 a.m., the SUV was recovered in an abandoned yard on the 7800 block of South Peoria. A witness tipped off the police, after he or she spotted the offender rummaging through the vehicle.

The suspect was described as a black man with a medium complexion and short hair, 5’10”, and 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

It’s unclear if anything was stolen from the officer’s car.

UPDATE: At 5:55 a.m., investigators recovered a bag taken from the officer's vehicle. The cop's personal belongings were found on the street at 7733 South Sangamon. It appears other items were taken from the officer's SUV.
