Six people were killed. The young girl, who was the only child injured during the shootings at a Safeway grocery store in Tucson, Arizona, later died at the hospital.
At 7:50 p.m. Chicago-time, Dr. Peter Rhee of the University Medical Center of Tucson, announced Congresswoman Giffords was not dead, as previously reported by several Arizona news sites.
Giffords was shot in the head and the bullet went through her brain, exiting her skull.
According to Dr. Rhee, a trauma surgeon, UMC received ten patients as a result of the shootings: One patient died, four were in critical condition, and five patients were in surgery at the time of Rhee's announcement.
I have received reports from a local Arizona news station, that Jared Loughner listed Sarah Palin and the Tea Party movement among his list of people and things that inspired him.
Palin, who has repeatedly used the words cross hairs in her speeches, also published a map that included Giffords on her so-called hit list. A tremendous backlash is now brewing against those in the Republican party who incite and inspire violence through their incessant usage of inflammatory language.
